Ἅιδης from α privat. , ἰδεῖν αιδης in Hom., attic α?δης; but in Trag. also α_ιδας:— gen. αιδεω as an anapaest in Hom.; gen. αιδα_ο Id=Hom.; gen. α_ιδος before a vowel, Il.

I.Hades or Pluto (cf. Πλούτων), the god of the nether world, son of Kronus and Rhea, brother to Zeus, Ζεὺς καὶ ἐγώ, τρίτατος δ᾽ Ἄιδης Il.; called Ζεὺς καταχθόνιος id=Il.; εἰν or εἰς Ἀΐδαο (sc. δόμοις, δόμους) in, into the nether world, Hom.; εἰν Ἄϊδος Il.; ἐν Ἅιδου, ἐς Ἅιδου (sc. οἴκῳ, οἶκον) attic:— also Ἄϊδόσδε adv., Il.
II.as appellative,Hades, the world below, εἰσόκεν ἄϊδι κεύθωμαι id=Il.; ἐπὶ τὸν ᾄδην Luc.; εἰς ἀΐδην Anth.; ἐν τῷ ᾄδῃ NTest.
2.the grave, death, ᾄδης πόντιος death by sea, Aesch., etc.
